Although, we have recently seen some progress with the reparations of RapidKL facilities such as escalators at several public transport stations, the next question is on when it’ll all be fully operational.

In a statement by RapidKL on their social media pages, they announced that repair works are ongoing to restore station facilities with an emphasis on the escalator services at stations and that it is all expected to be fully completed in February 2023.

“As of Dec 15 (2022) the process of replacing 20 handrail units and 3 step chain units at 10 MRT stations have been completed, and the escalators at the stations are back in operation.”

“As a long-term measure, we have implemented a ‘condition based maintenance’ (CBM) programme where the process of replacing components that are judged to be damaged or frequently problematic will continue to be implemented without waiting for its end of service life,” they stated.

“Based on the CBM concept we have made sufficient advance bookings to support the programme.”

It also said that they were addressing the leakage issues at the stations. “The remainder is being carried out in stages and will be completed in June 2023.”

“For the repair work at the MRT station, discussions with MRT Corporation as the owner of the asset have been conducted. The repair process at 22 locations has been carried out. We are currently checking the effectiveness of the repair work,” they added.

“There are, however, locations of leaks that require more time to resolve because the repairs involve modifications to the roof structure,” they said.

Meanwhile, the statement further read that other aspects of repairs were being looked into including repairing the wiring system and replacing problematic bulbs.

“We have carried out regular inspection and maintenance programmes and currently the number of non-functioning lights is below 1%. The remaining lights that are still not working are new faults and will be replaced immediately.”

Rapid Rail then emphasised that 99% of their elevator services at the LRT and MRT stations were operating.

“Maintenance activities are always carried out periodically to ensure that the facilities provided for users are in good condition. Regarding the issue of elevators in monorail stations, the original design of monorail stations did not have elevator facilities,” they added.

“Realising the needs of users, especially the elderly and the disabled, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd has taken the initiative to add 18 units of lifts and 39 units of ‘wheelchair platform lifts’ for the comfort of the public.”

“The work to upgrade the facilities on the monorail requires structural improvements and safety issues that need to be addressed. The upgrade project will start in the first quarter of 2023 and will take 18 months to complete,” they concluded.
