Halal-certified hotels and food premises are allowed to display Christmas decorations as long as they do not compromise the principles of halalan toyyiban, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan.

Zulkifli, said this refers to a decision made by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) in 2023.

He explained that temporary decorations, images, or illustrations related to non-Islamic festivals on food products are permitted.

However, Zulkifli stressed that the use of worship items is not allowed, and decorations or premises adornments must not involve the display of the SPHM certificate or the Halal logo.

“This decision applies to issues concerning festive decorations in kitchens or hotel outlets that hold the Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM),” he said in a statement.

Respecting Malaysia’s cultural and religious diversity is part of the nation’s identity

According to Zulkifli, respecting Malaysia’s cultural and religious diversity is part of the nation’s identity, and industry players are encouraged to continue adhering to existing halal standards without neglecting racial harmony.

He advised hotels and food premises with SPHM certification to always consult the relevant halal certification authorities for clarification and guidance to ensure continuous compliance with national halal standards.

“Close cooperation between state Islamic authorities, JAKIM, and industry players is crucial to ensure that halal policies and guidelines are implemented prudently, while considering the interests of Muslims and overall societal harmony.

“This approach reflects the ongoing commitment of the Madani Government to uphold the sanctity of Malaysia’s halal certification while strengthening interfaith and cultural harmony,” he said.
