As much as we hate to admit, sex crimes and domestic violence do occur in Malaysia at a very alarming rate.

Recently, a report revealed that a total of 50,658 cases of rape, incest, molestation, unnatural sex acts, sexual harassment and domestic violence were recorded from 2013 to May 2018, according to The Malay Mail. This shocking number originates from the data tabulated by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry.

Furthermore, the Ministry also recorded a total of 3,439 reported sex crimes and domestic violence cases from January to May 2018. These concerning stats were released by Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto after she asked it from the ministry during a parliament sitting.

After obtaining it, Kasthuri shared the stats on her official Facebook account.

She wrote,

“It is sad to see the statistics of sexual crimes, rape and domestic violence committed by our own people. With just a 30 million population, we are encountering so many such crimes.”

“These are only the reported cases… what about the ones which have not been recorded or reported?”

“We must speak for the people who are unable to speak out such as the children, teenagers, women and men, who are the victims of these abuses.”

The report further revealed that Selangor, Johor and Kedah recorded the highest number of cases in all categories for the past five years (2013 – 2018). Sadly, the victims were mostly women, children and teenagers below the age of 18.

According to the report she shared, approximately 7,309 rape cases, 1,200 incest cases and 3,478 molest cases were recorded for the past five years and most of the victims were children and teenagers below the age of 18. This is sad!

“Whilst, around 984 unnatural sexual acts cases and 157 sexual harassment cases involve children and teenagers aged below 18 as victims since 2013,” the ministry reported.

As for unnatural sex act, a total of two cases were reported in 2014 and 2017, which involved animals. Other than that, a total of 5,055 domestic violence cases involving victims under the age of 25 were reported since 2013.

These numbers are worrisome and we should get rid of this problem as soon as possible! We hope that the authorities will enforce the law against people who commit these crimes and provide shelter for the victims. Sexual crimes and domestic violence are problems we should quickly address as it can affect the well-being of a country.
