Bangladesh made headlines worldwide recently after the deadly nationwide protests for quota reform which ultimately saw the resignation of many key figures in the country, including now former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country amidst the protests.

The South Asian nation is now in the process of recovering under a caretaker government led by popular figure Muhammad Yunus.

Following the end of the hullabaloo, Bangladeshis living outside their country began to send money back home again via remittance services as they were confident with the new leadership.

These include Malaysia, which has a sizable Bangladesh population employed as migrant workers.

As reported by the Dhaka-based publication The Business Standard, Bangladeshi workers crowd money changers in Malaysia which offers remittance services to send their hard-earned money back home to their families.

The report attached a photo of a packed money changer in Kuala Lumpur on 12 August, where migrant workers can be seen queueing up to use the remittance service.

A whopping RM2.1 BILLION in remittance entered Bangladesh in just 10 days

Besides that, the report quoted the head of the Treasury division of an Islamic bank as saying that a considerable amount of remittance into Bangladesh came from Malaysia, Singapore, the UAE and the UK.

The Bangladesh Bank reported that in just the first 10 days of August, a whopping USD482.77 million or approximately RM2.1 billion in total entered Bangladesh in remittance.

This is in stark comparison to when the protests were ongoing, whereby during the 1st 6 days before and after Sheikh Hasna’s resignation as Prime Minister, only USD95.65 million or RM425.5 million came to Bangladesh as remittance.
