“RM33 Million loss” – MACC Arrests 7 Customs Agents For Luxury Car Duties Syndicate

7 individuals, believed to be customs agents have been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for a luxury car duties syndicate.

The individuals are believed to have offered a syndicate to lower the duties on luxury cars, which resulted in the loss of about RM33 million in customs tax.

As reported by BERNAMA, the 7 suspects are aged between 30 and 60 and were arrested at the Kedah MACC office between 5 and 10.30pm on Thursday (13 July). There were at the MACC office to have their statements recorded when arrested and remanded until tomorrow (17 July).

The syndicate conspired with the owners of the vehicles involved by falsifying documents to obtain a reduction in customs duty assessment despite their vehicles not being eligible for reductions.

The arrest was part of the operation conducted by the special operations division of MACC, which also conducted raids at several business premises, government agency offices and residences in the Klang Valley, Kedah, Johor, Perak and Sabah.

Meanwhile, MACC special operations division senior director Dauk Tan Kang Sai confirmed the arrests and said the case was being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.
