What are our Malaysian cities without their roadside stalls? After all, they’re what makes our food so easily available 24/7!

Well, judging by what the Ministry of Federal Territories has proposed, these roadside stalls might not be scattered all over the city anymore!

The Ministry is reportedly aiming to clear the region of roadside hawker stalls by the year 2020. That means all roadside stalls will either have to be relocated or begin operating from food trucks by this deadline, according to Minister of Federal Territories, Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

He went on to say that the ministry will also ensure that there would be no more hawkers cooking by the side of the road as they will instead be required to cook in separate locations before bringing their food to be sold at their respective premises. What about my favourite char kuey teow? T_T

“Right now, there are thousands of roadside stalls within the Federal Territory. This proposal to remove roadside stalls also includes common roadside stalls that sell ‘pisang goreng‘ and nasi lemak,” said the minister, according to Berita Harian.

“We will also help improve these roadside stalls to a different system on top of preparing a designated area for them to run their stalls.”

KIMMA president Datuk Seri Syed Ibrahim Kader, also agreed with the proposed move of the roadside stalls to a designated location, saying that it could improve traffic in the city and lower incidences of health problems like food poisoning.

Although this proposed change may sound daunting, these roadside stalls won’t be completely eradicated from our cities. They’ll just be moved elsewhere, hopefully to a more convenient location like the six potential food truck sites DBKL was reportedly going to open sometime this year!
