On April 27, Kiruba Devi and her 6-year-old daughter, Phoenix took an Uber ride and made a quick stop at Duta bus terminal to purchase a ticket to Langkawi.

According to Berita Daily, Kiruba took a few pieces of notes off the RM1,000 stack she had to buy her ticket. She then left the remaining stack in her handbag, in the car as she trusted the Uber driver.
“I told the driver that I’m leaving my bag and my daughter who had slept off in the car and will be back in two minutes. You trust them (driver) because Uber has all your details as well as the driver’s. “
“But when I came back, I saw my bag was opened so I checked through to see if all my things were there. But I couldn’t find the money. I told him that the money is missing from my bag and he was like ‘I don’t know… maybe you dropped it somewhere in the car’ which just doesn’t make sense because I am not going to drop RM1,000 in the car and forget about it,” she said.”
When Kiruba pressed on the issue, the driver drove them around and refused to stop at the Mont Kiara police station as requested. The audacity!
“I was robbed by the Uber driver and he wouldn’t stop the car. During that time, he drove my daughter and I around in circles for almost an hour!”
“I called up Uber support and informed the support personnel to trace the car as I was in it with my daughter, and she flippantly told me to just stop at a police station and they will reimburse the stolen money.”
“I screamed at this point saying that ‘I’m in the Uber still and the driver just wouldn’t stop!’ She then proceeded to hang up the phone.”
Eventually, the driver stopped at Mont Kiara police station and Kiruba asked her daughter to run inside the police station. Thankfully, a Korean woman passed by and helped the little kid to get inside and alerted police officers.
“By this time, the driver had driven off and one of the officers jumped on his bike and gave chase. The driver was caught within minutes. Phoenix was very shaken up with the whole thing, she wasn’t talking or smiling for at least 3 hours!
When contacted by Berita Daily, Kiruba expressed that it’d be too troublesome for her to go through the legal process as she’s working in Langkawi. And also the driver who’s an army man has 2 children and a wife who’s pregnant with their third child.
After the incident, Kiruba received 3 phone calls and an apology from Uber, and RM17 as refund. But the lack of initiatives to take action from Uber has frustrated her.
“I want to get reimbursed for the trauma me and my child went through,” she said.
Kiruba is now considering a lawsuit against Uber if no action is taken until Thursday. However, Jeffery from Uber response team said, “we have already contacted the rider after the incident and the issue has been resolved” when contacted by Berita Daily.
So guys, carry your bags with you at all times just to be safe lah. It really is better to be safe than sorry.
