On 9 February, Health Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba, announced that the observation period for ministers returning from any official overseas visits have been reduced from ten days to three days.

However, it seems to be a different story in Sarawak with Local Government and Housing minister Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian saying that Sarawak’s policy remains the same for anyone returning from abroad to the state, reported The Borneo Post.

“They need to be quarantined for 14 days and a swab test will be taken on the 10th day, regardless of whether they are ministers, YBs or VIPs.”

Dr Sim added that the Sarawak government will not be following the health minister’s orders. If there were any changes in the state’s policy, the Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian would hence seek advice from medical experts before making any changes.

Following the Heath Minister’s orders, Malaysians were quick to point out the flaws in this announcement and some even demanded the resignation of Adham Baba citing incompetence. On the same day, Health Director-General, Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah justified the Health Minister’s move saying that the quarantine period could be longer depending on the minister’s itinerary while on their trip.

Malaysians also called out the double-standards practice among the common people and political leaders.
