‘Hypnotist scammer’ is no longer an alien term for us Malaysians. The elderly especially are common victims of these sly tricks. As a result, the public is very wary of strangers, making it hard for us to trust anyone at all.
Through a tweet posted by @Mayangmahsuriii, she described a scammer’s modus operandi after her mother was tricked into giving away her gold bracelets willingly.
“RETWEET TILL CAPTURED. How could you lie to my innocent mother who did nothing wrong to you. You took her gold bracelet, and even pretended to be a customer! I have never done this before but please make this viral so that she would just come and apologised to my mom. THIEF!”

In the thread, Mayang said that the scammer had first appeared at her parent’s nasi lemak stall as a customer. The scammer has the air of a religious person as she talked very softly and politely. Because of that, she was immediately able to have great conversation with the old couple.
“She even claimed that her father is a high ranking policeman and her mother is a surgeon at KPJ Seremban Hospital.”
Mayang’s mother, 63, was visibly wearing a bunch of gold bracelets thus creating a solid reason for the scammer to talk about them normally. In her made-up story, she said that her fiancée had given her the money to buy a gold bracelet for herself, but she just didn’t know where to buy a decent one.

“She told my mom that she wanted one that is similar to the one that my mom wore. My mom replied that she bought it in Kuala Pilah but the scammer insisted that she wanted my mom to help her buy one.”
At that moment, Mayang’s father stepped in and stopped the conversation, saying that she shouldn’t easily give out big cash to people. The woman then continued with her ‘big order’ for the next day.
“They exchanged phone numbers so that they could discuss the order later.”
As the two old couple were about to clean up their stall that morning, the scammer texted Mayang’s mother and asked her to drop by Palm Mall’s entrance as she claimed to work nearby the location.
“Mak cik, can you drop by the Palm Mall’s entrance and pick up the money for tomorrow’s order?”
So the trusting old lady went with her niece while her husband waited in the car. When they met up, the scammer only talked a little about the order, and focused more on the bracelet. Insisting that she needed to have that exact bracelet, she added that one of the cleaners will travel to Kuala Pilah soon.

“I didn’t bring my phone to take the picture of this bracelet but can you lend it to me for a while so that I can show it to the cleaner as an example?”, the scammer said while caressing the Makcik’s hand and gold bracelet.
Probably hypnotised, the aunty gave in and took off her bracelet – and thus the bracelet was never to be seen again.
According to Mayang, it saddens her to know that her mother waited in front of the entrance faithfully for her ‘borrowed’ bracelet.
Allegedly, the netizen revealed that the same woman has been seen in various scamming cases since 2016.
