It’s not wrong to want to look for better job opportunities overseas, but it is important that we always make sure that said opportunities are legitimate.

Unfortunately, for a Malaysian, he had fallen victim to a job scam in Cambodia, where he currently is.

Based on a post by Bukit Mertajam MP, Steven Sim, the scammers are now extorting US$15,000 (RM66,331.50) from the parents of the man.

He wrote, “Today, Mrs Khor came to my office to ask for help rescuing her son who is allegedly being locked up by his employer in Cambodia. The employer wants them to pay US$15,000 (RM66,331.50), otherwise their son will be ‘sold’ elsewhere.”

The parents have since made a police report on the matter and Sim has also assisted by submitting information to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“I understand that there are many more similar cases being handled by the Malaysian embassy in Cambodia. I urge the government to immediately save the Malaysians who are victims of scams in Cambodia.”

“This is not the first case, the government should take drastic action to crack down on job scam syndicates before more Malaysians become victims. Don’t wait until the victim is locked up abroad, threatened, abused before we find a way out. This is clearly an activity of human trafficking and smuggling,” he added.

Sim also urged the general public to be more wary of job advertisements that offer lucrative salaries to work overseas and to be less gullible.

“To the public, DO NOT be easily fooled by the promise of lucrative job offers abroad. Investigate the background of the company and the employment agent first. NEVER agree to do a job abroad without a valid visa. If in doubt, consult the authorities,” he explained.
