The Selangor state government is planning to implement a ban on plastic bags at all business premises from Fridays to Sundays, starting next year.

The Selangor Public Health and Environment EXCO, Jamaliah Jamaluddin, shared that the government is looking into enforcing this initiative in an effort towards reducing plastic usage.

“This year, we have held workshops to strengthen or tighten the relevant laws, in addition to enforcement actions for this matter,”

“At this time, it is also important for us to know what types of sources of power can be used under the state government’s jurisdiction so that when this initiative is announced, it can be implemented in line with enforcement actions,” she said during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly (DUN) session on Monday (November 25).

This comes after Meru state assemblyperson, Mariam Abdul Rashid, asked about Selangor’s plans to expand their zero plastic and polystyrene campaign.

According to a report by Berita Harian, Selangor has implemented its ‘No Plastic Bag Day’ campaign every Saturday since 2010, with the support of most supermarkets, mini markets and other business premises.

Customers who require plastic bags are charged RM0.20 for each plastic bag, with the money accumulated being channelled to charities or consumerism and environmental conservation programmes.

Last July, Jamaliah announced that Selangor had recorded a collection of RM38 million from the RM0.20 plastic bag charge between 2020 and 2023. These proceeds were used to implement efforts that include planting trees, installing solar lights, community garden projects and celebrating Earth Day.
