Earlier, Tengku Zafrul announced that he had submitted his resignation from the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).
According to Berita Harian, he also confirmed that he had handed in his resignation letters for his positions as Supreme Council Member, UMNO Kota Raja Division Chief, and party member to the party leadership.

In response, Selangor UMNO Youth slammed Zafrul’s decision to quit the party and join PKR, calling it irresponsible and driven by personal interest.
Its chief, Datuk Mohd Imran Tamrin, said the move also sets a poor example for political leadership.
He pointed out that Zafrul’s role as the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry came thanks to the positions he held in UMNO at both central and state levels.
“Selangor UMNO Youth urges the party leadership to maintain the current number of ministers and deputy ministers from UMNO in the Unity Government’s Cabinet. We want the seven ministerial and five deputy ministerial posts held by UMNO to be retained. This is crucial to ensure the party’s voice remains balanced in the government,” he said.

“A party leader who made a selfish choice”
Imran also said UMNO Youth doesn’t see Tengku Zafrul’s move as just a personal decision, but as a party leader making a selfish choice without thinking about his role and responsibilities.
“He was not appointed but elected as a Supreme Council Member and as the UMNO Kota Raja Division Chief,” he said.
He added that quitting the party and jumping to another one in the same coalition isn’t how UMNO or Barisan Nasional works, since there’s usually a sense of mutual respect between the component parties.
