A 61-year-old man had his motorcycle confiscated during a roadblock by JPJ in Ipoh. The senior citizen had been riding his motorcycle without a valid road tax for 23 years.

The Director of JPJ Perak, Mohammad Yusoff Abustan, said that the Honda EX5 Dream motorcycle was amongst the 15 confiscated motorcycles during the operation at Jalan Sibilin-Ipoh yesterday morning (February 6).

The senior citizen, who is also the owner of a workshop said he did not renew the road tax because his motorcycle is usually used to travel around the housing area and not the main roads.

“His road tax and motor vehicle license (LKM) expired in 2002.”

“This is a serious offence. LKM is not only proof that the vehicle has been registered, but also ensures the owner pays the required road tax and meets the vehicle safety requirements,” Yusoff said, reported Berita Harian.

Yussoff also said that strict action will be taken against the motorcycle owner for violating Section 23(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which requires all motor vehicles on the road to have a valid vehicle license.

Yusoff also highlighted that it is a punishable offence.

“Failure to renew the LKM can result in a fine of up to RM2,000 or imprisonment of up to six months, or both, if convicted.”

This shall serve as a reminder to all road users to keep the relevant vehicle documents updated.
