The Seremban City Council (MBS) recently took to its Facebook page to showcase an operation where they removed all doors from units at a low-cost flat (PPR) in Lobak, Negeri Sembilan, after the tenants were discovered to have failed to pay their rent for years.
Some of the tenants even owed tens of thousands in unpaid rental debt, despite the monthly rental being RM150.
In the video, MBS personnel, along with PDRM officers, confronted the tenants in question before revealing that they would be removing all the doors of the tenant’s unit, including grilles and toilet doors.
One tenant owed RM34,000 after years of not paying their RM150 monthly rental, while another owed RM21,350.
The MBS officers also pointed out that the person inside the unit who owes RM34,000 in unpaid rental isn’t the official tenant, leading them to label her a trespasser.
Handymen brought by the MBS officers then entered the units before removing the main doors, grilles and all doors inside the unit.
Netizens respond to the video
Malaysians didn’t show sympathy for the tenants who lost their doors as they believe the RM150 monthly rental cost is not high. Some also highlighted that the official tenants may be subletting their units to others and pocketing the rental costs without paying MBS.
“They’re already given the lowest rental rates and they can’t pay it? It sounds like they want to stay there for free.”
“There are many others applying for PPR, so those who do not pay (their rent) should be asked to pack up. It’s just RM150 a month and they can’t afford to pay it.”
“They just want to stay for free. Other people work day and night to pay their rent, and you want to stay there for free.”
“Arrears of over RM30,000. The monthly rent is RM150, so they didn’t pay their rent for about 16 years! What’s worse is that some of the original tenants may be renting to others. RM150 per month is very affordable, compared to other houses in the free market out there.”
