A Singaporean couple came to Johor to have a meal on 29 September and when they were on their way home at about 4pm, they were stopped by some traffic police near the checkpoint.

“We thought it was just a routine inspection. After the police checked my husband’s driver’s license and passport, they asked us if we came to Malaysia often and whether we were familiar with the road.”

“My husband told the truth that he still had to rely on GPS when driving,” said Cao, the wife.

They were then told by the police that they had run 2 red lights at a certain intersection and were instructed to follow the police back to the police station.

Cao mentioned in an interview with Shin Min Daily that her husband has always been a cautious driver and is extra vigilant when driving in Malaysia.

The couple abided and followed them. After driving about 500 meters, the police parked under a flyover that was very quiet and motioned for Cao’s husband to come down from the car. They asked him to pay a fine of RM500.

“At that time, my husband only had RM200 in his wallet. After giving it to the traffic police, they took two S$50 from his wallet, put the bills in the record book and left.”

That incident was very traumatising and the couple has said that they don’t dare to come back to Malaysia in the near future.

Following inquiries from Shin Min Daily, the Johor police have confirmed the identity of the police officer involved and it is said that he will be transferred to a division where he does not come into direct contact with the public.

The Johor chief police, Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat has said that once investigations have been completed, the police officer will face disciplinary actions and might even be dismissed.

This is certainly inexcusable. We hope that this doesn’t deter anyone from coming to Malaysia.
