A 42-year-old Singaporean woman was sentenced to 3 weeks in jail on Friday (November 15), after pleading guilty to one count of violating section 6(b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

This is because the woman, who was caught illegally driving in the bus lane of the Causeway heading to Johor Bahru, had attempted to bribe a Singaporean auxiliary police officer with RM217.

According to a report by Lianhe Zaobao, this all started on Wednesday (July 17), when she decided to head to Johor Bahru to show a friend around and collect a medical report.

She had already passed through Singapore immigration with her friend when she decided to use the dedicated bus and lorry lane.

An officer spotted her doing this, stopped her, informed her that she was not allowed to use the lane and instructed her to U-turn to the Woodlands Checkpoint to re-enter Malaysia. However, she offered the officer RM50 to allow her to go on her way. The officer refused and asked her for her passport.

The woman then gave the officer her passport along with a SG$50 (RM167) note. She also once again asked the officer to accept the money and let her go, adding that she needed to head to a hospital.

The officer strictly rejected the bribe and the woman was arrested at the Woodlands Checkpoint.

While in court, the woman defended herself by saying that her English is poor and she thought the auxiliary officer, who is Malay, was working for the Malaysian authorities and not the Singaporean authorities.

She added that she thought he had wanted more money, which led her to offer the bribe again.
