It’s never easy being an educator as the fate and the knowledge of the students lie in your hand. But when syllabuses prove to be too “advanced” for the students to grasp, how do you continue to manage the crisis as a teacher?

Over the weekend, a Malaysian teacher made headlines after risking being fired following his attempt to voice his concerns about the current school syllabus, some of which may not be appropriate for young students. Not long after, the image of a workbook allegedly for Standard 2 students is now circulating on social media for the wrong reasons.

Facebook page Redaksi.com reshared the images of the workbook, and the questions, no doubt will require the young students to get their brain juice flowing in order to get the answers, but are the questions beyond their capacity to even relate to?

“Ridiculous syllabus”

The images have gained the attention of many Malaysians, who mostly agreed that the syllabus is a little too tough for young students to even relate to. Some of them also expressed support in the teacher’s decision to voice out against the syllabus.

A netizen has described the questions as an attempt to create a young Albert Einstein.

“Crazy questions. In Japan, they focus more on educating about morality, discipline, respect, self-love, and hygiene.”

“This syllabus is ridiculous. I hope God will punish the people who ruin the country’s education system.”

Another netizen has since compared the current education system with the past.

“Back in the ’90s, Standard 1 and 2 students were still learning to calculate. I can’t even describe this level of stress. Poor students. This is a university-level question and it’s burdening the students’ mental state.”

“I’d like to see the person who came up with this question. What was he thinking? I pity the students and the teacher who has to struggle in making the students understand the question.”

In the meantime, a netizen took the time to respond to the image sarcastically.

“The Ministry of Education should’ve started engineering classes for Standard 2 students. By next year, they can become an engineer.”

Come to think of it, we barely had any critical thinking questions when we just entered primary school. Do you think these questions are too tough and irrelevant to young students?
