A man in Singapore was recently found guilty of four charges, including voluntarily causing hurt, after beating a woman to the ground and later assaulting a man by driving a car into him.

The incident took place on 5 July 2022, at around 10:20 PM, when the accused, Peng Yangguang (transliteration), who was 26 at the time, went to his ex-girlfriend’s home at Block 106B, Canberra Street.

A Singaporean man assaulted a man after spotting him with his ex-girlfriend

Peng, who was unlicensed, borrowed a car and drove to his ex-girlfriend’s home, hoping to run into her, only to see her with a male friend, according to Lianhe Zaobao.

In a fit of rage, he immediately confronted the man, verbally abusing and punching him. The male victim managed to escape, but when he turned back, he saw Peng repeatedly punching the female victim in the head and shoulder, causing her to fall to the ground.

He shouted at Peng to stop, but Peng instead chased him, and they eventually ended up at a multi-storey car park, where Peng attempted to run the victim over by driving the car into the victim.

After Peng left the scene, the victim asked for help from two passersby, one of whom contacted the police.

The ex-girlfriend went to the hospital the following day, where doctors found a 1cm laceration on the back right side of her head, along with redness and swelling on her right shoulder.

The court’s verdict on the case

The case was later taken to court, where Peng pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt, possession of a dangerous weapon, driving without a licence, and violating the Prevention of Harassment Act.

During the hearing, the prosecution said the defendant had previously assaulted the same male victim on 22 June that year and fled the scene afterwards.

The judge sentenced him to eight months and nine weeks in prison, along with six strokes of the cane, and banned him from holding or obtaining any class of driving license for two years.
