With the Covid-19 outbreak, everyone seems to be getting more and more paranoid. Everyone has been asked to avoid public gatherings and to immediately self-quarantine if they were to exhibit any symptoms of the virus. Nevertheless, these pet owners seem to have taken their paranoia a little too far.

Two weeks ago, a Pomeranian dog was tested as weak positive for the virus after its owner was tested positive on the virus herself. This caused increased fears among some Singaporean pet owners. Singapore’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said in a Facebook post that some pet owners have reached out to them asking if they should surrender their pets to protect themselves.

SPCA further clarified that there’s currently no evidence that the virus can be transmitted from animals to humans. The Pomeranian which most probably contracted the virus from its owner didn’t even display any symptoms of the disease.

“The primary mode of transmission of the virus remains human to human. You are no safer from the virus if you surrender your pet.”

They added that at the end of the day, good hygiene is what keeps you safe during this pandemic. They even reminded pet owners to wash their hands before and after interacting with their pets and to also make sure that their pets are up-to-date with their vaccinations.

Do not make any rash decisions especially during these trying times. Make sure to consult medical officials if you feel like you’re exhibiting any symptoms of the disease. Also, don’t give up your furry friends for no good reason!
