It is known that cannabis has medicinal properties which can provide a cost-effective alternative to certain medications that may be expensive and addictive, as well as a general pain reliever. However, there is still a stigma revolving around the plant which overshadows its benefits. The good news is, there are parties within the region who are working hard to legalize the use of the wonder plant, especially for medicinal purposes.

One of Thailand’s ruling coalition parties has suggested a draft law which will allow Thais to grow about six cannabis plants at home if approved. This is just a few months after the country has legalised the substance for medicinal purposes and research. Supachai Jaisamut, a senior lawmaker in the Bhumjaithai Party, told Reuters,

“The principle is for medical use, you can have it at home for ailments, but not smoke it on the street.”

He also explained that this law will also enable the plant to be sold by licensed institutions and the law could be passed within six months when parliament re-opens if the government supports this initiative.

Thailand is spearheading the movement and it is stepping in the right direction as it is widely known that the benefits of cannabis largely outweigh the stigma that comes with it. Hopefully, this will open the eyes of Malaysians too.
