Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is set to serve the remainder of his prison sentence in Kajang Prison, and not at home, after his bid for house arrest was dismissed.

While some DAP leaders “rejoiced” at the news, Najib’s daughter, Nooryana Najwa, took to her Instagram Stories today (22 December) to express her family’s heartbreak.

“So sorry, daddy”

Nooryana, affectionately known as Yana Najib, apologised to her father for being unable to secure the house arrest bid, and told him to hang in there.

“I can’t imagine daddy’s feelings at this moment. Please be patient, okay? We live to fight another day, as always.”

“Take care of your health, that’s the most important thing,” Yana wrote.

Before receiving the bad news, Yana also shared a post on Instagram Stories about Najib’s personal cook, who said he was going to prepare the former Prime Minister’s favourite dish if Najib were allowed to undergo house arrest.

Over the past few years, Yana has been a vocal advocate for her jailed father while expressing her concerns about his health, including when he was hospitalised for a stomach ulcer.

The failed house arrest bid

High Court judge Alice Loke Yee Ching ruled that the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s addendum order for Najib’s house arrest is invalid and cannot be carried out.

According to the verdict, this is because the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong did not follow the requirements under Article 42 of the Federal Constitution when His Majesty decreed the addendum order for Najib to be placed under house arrest.

The judge said this means the Malaysian Government has “no power and no duty to obey and enforce” the house arrest order.

Najib’s lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said they had issues with Justice Alice Loke’s decision, which he stated had caught them by surprise, and they will appeal the decision.
