Some grocery stores in KL have made it mandatory for customers to show their respective identification cards (IC) before buying subsidised rice.

This is to prevent foreigners from buying the subsidised local white rice

Another thing to remember is that some vendors in KL are also limiting the purchase per family. In a report by the New Straits Times, 47-year-old Sharon Pooi only allows each family to purchase two bags of local white rice. Of course, this also comes after she has checked the required identification.

Another trader in a different area, Yaw made it simple by displaying a notice about the limited purchase at his store, which is also set at two bags per family.

Yaw also displayed another sign to clearly state that IC is needed for verification.

“This is to make sure that the subsidised rice is only sold to those eligible and to prevent misunderstandings.”

In the meantime, there are also traders who limit the purchase to only ONE bag per family.

Nurul, a 28-year-old cashier said the management of her store only allows each family to buy ONE bag of subsidised local white rice, which is done to ensure all customers benefit from it.

Back in February, the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry announced that a total of 24 million packs of subsidised local white rice will be available to the public starting March 1, which is priced at RM26 per 10 KG.

To those staying in Klang Valley, have the grocery stores in your area started to implement the “No MyKad, no subsidised rice” rule? What do you think of this?
