Dang, what we were going to do with those lion bones?

South African officials have confiscated a huge amount (342kg) of lion bones which were meant to be shipped to Malaysia, reported The Star. Apparently, they (lion bones) have medicinal value, and they can be made into jewellery. The South African environment ministry revealed that they have arrested three people at Johannesburg airport.

The ministry was quoted as saying,

“When the shipment was inspected, 12 boxes of lion bones wrapped in aluminium foil and weighing 342 kg were discovered.”

Their spokesman, Albi Modise, shared that trading bones of lions which are bred in captivity is legal but one would need a permit to ship it out. Therefore, this particular export was halted because it was “misdeclared”.

Two out of the three people that were arrested are Zimbabwean and the other person’s identity still remains a mystery. If you didn’t know, South Africa has more than 11,000 lions, and 3,000 of these majestic animals live in national parks. Hunting is forbidden in national parks.

We hope that the authorities will find a solution to this issue as soon as possible. What are your thoughts about this article? Let us know in the comments below!
