The SPM oral exams started today (December 2)! Unfortunately for SPM students in Kelantan who are affected by the ongoing flood situation, many were sent to flood evacuation centres (PPS) and hostels in Tumpat, Kelantan while awaiting their exams.

A former Malaysian teacher, Mohd Fadhli Salleh took to his Facebook page and shared the unpleasant situation the students had to go through.

Students sleep on the floor without mattresses or pillows

The hostels were unfortunately all occupied so the students had to sleep on the floor of a surau without mattresses, using their arms as pillows.

According to Fahdli, those who are seeking shelter at one of the PPS in Biji Wangsa, Tumpat, Kelantan did not fare better in their situations. Similarly, some flood victims had to sleep on the hard floor, including one of the elderly with an illness.

“An uncle with a stroke had to request for a mattress. There were 25 SPM students in the PPS and fortunately, the place had extra mattresses. They were all given mattresses for their comfort.”

In his post, Fahdli also provided supportive words to the students who were waiting to sit for their examinations.

“Do your best tomorrow and in the days to come, okay? When you grow up and succeed, who knows, maybe one of you will become a Minister. I’m sure you’ll postpone exams when disasters like this hit the country in the future.”

Will SPM be postponed?

According to the Ministry of Education, both SPM and STPM examinations will proceed as scheduled.

“If we postpone it, it will affect other things, including the admission of students to the university. We have the best mechanism to deal with issues arising from the floods without having to postpone the exams,” said the Director-General of Education, Azman Adnan during a media conference today.

To the flood victims across the country, hang in there!
