One of the biggest perks of being a Malaysian is that our country has one of the lowest prices for fuel in the region, all thanks to the subsidies put in place by the government.

The government has continued the policy of blanket-subsidising RON95 petrol and diesel until today, though this will change later this year with the proposed targeted subsidy system’s implementation.

However, the blanket subsidy has unfortunately resulted in those not eligible for the subsidy, namely foreigners, taking advantage of the cheap fuel prices. Throughout the years, many foreign-registered vehicles have been spotted filling in RON95, with the most recent viral incident involving a Singaporean-registered vehicle at an undisclosed location in Malaysia.

Making its rounds on the social media platform X, a 45-second video of the incident has caught the attention of Malaysians, most notably due to the alleged tactics being used by the vehicle owner to hide the car’s Singaporean plate number.

Shared by X user @bitcoinmalaya, the video has been viewed over 1.8 million times and garnered more than 5,000 reposts on the platform as of the time of writing.

In the video, the car can be seen being filled up at a fuel station by the driver with the plate number partly obstructed by black ropes, though one can still see that it’s a Singaporean-registered plate number.

Furthermore, the driver also looked to be deliberately hiding the nozzle so that others couldn’t see what type of fuel he was pumping the vehicle with.

However, the individual recording saw that the car was being filled with RON95 petrol and called out the driver by honking and telling him off for doing so. It is unknown when and where this video was recorded.

In the caption of the X post, @bitcoinmalaya said “Singaporeans don’t care because they know our enforcement is a joke”, with the text overlaid on the video asserting,

“Singaporeans’ latest tactic to pump RON95 petrol.”

In the comments, many Malaysians share their two cents on the incident. One commenter claimed that this issue has nothing to do with lackadaisical enforcement by the relevant authority but instead a problem with fuel station owners who just let such an occurrence happen.

Meanwhile, another commenter suggested that these viral videos include the location of the incident and tag the relevant authorities so that they can be easily notified and take action.
