For those who are planning on tinting their vehicle windows, take note!

According to Utusan Online, the Ministry of Transport revealed new rules on tinted windows for vehicles today (7th May).

Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the changes were a response to demands from motorists who wanted darker windows due to the hot and sunny weather. These changes are also reportedly in accordance with the United Nations Regulations on safety glazing materials installation on vehicles.

As reported by The Star, below are the new changes that will take place starting Wednesday and will only apply to private vehicles and those used for e-hailing services;

  • Front windshields have to let in 70 per cent of light
  • Front passenger side windows have to let in 50 per cent of light
  • Rear windshields and passenger windows are now allowed

“We will not compromise on regulations for tinting windows at the front of the vehicle,” Anthony Loke stated.

While these new rules will apply to all private vehicles, the Minister did point out that it is possible to have all windows fully tinted, but motorists have to apply for permission to do so and would be required to pay a RM50 service fee per application. A committee headed by Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Seri Shaharuddin Khalid will review and approve these applications by cross-checking with the police to see if applicants have no outstanding summonses.

Once their application is approved by the committee, motorists will be charged RM5,000 for a permit. Each approval will last two years, and motorists are required to reapply once their permits expire. Motorists who apply for fully-tinted windows for health-related reasons are exempt from these fees.
