Companies in Malaysia are really starting to hop on the bandwagon to reduce plastic waste and many of them are starting with abolishing the use of plastic straws.
One of the most recent ones we spotted in Malaysia is McDonald’s, who have quietly begun their no plastic straws campaign.
We noticed the signs in a local McDonald’s outlet recently where they stated that they would be starting a “Say No to Straws” campaign that would be starting on August 1. This is not a new move as KFC Singapore already announced that they would be implementing this initiative from June 20.
In one of their posters around the outlet, they reminded customers to help save the planet by refusing to use straws which are very harmful to the environment. It is estimated that about 31 million Malaysians use plastic straws every day, which is more than enough to fill eight school buses. Imagine that amount!
They also reminded consumers that for an item that you would be using for only 20 minutes, it actually takes about 200 years for it to decompose. That’s for only one straw! Of course, if you really need a straw, then you can still ask the McDonald’s staff for one.
While there is currently no official statement from the fast food chain, WORLD OF BUZZ has reached out to them to find out whether this initiative is going to be implemented throughout Malaysia. So far, it looks like selected outlets in Klang Valley and Penang have started putting up these signs.
Do your part for the environment and start using reusable and recyclable cutlery, peeps! If you are not sure where to start buying reusable straws, read the article below!
