The grave of a UPSI student, one of the 15 people who died in the tragic crash in Perak, has been cordoned off after some visitors allegedly carried out superstitious rituals by taking soil from the grave in hopes of receiving blessings.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, has since reminded Muslims to respect burial grounds and not get involved in practices that go against Islamic teachings.
Anyone caught doing such acts could face legal action
Following the incident, the Terengganu State Religious Department has issued a warning over the superstitious practices happening at the grave of the late Nurly Sahirah Azman, as reported by Sinar Harian.
According to Aizi Saidi Abd Aziz, Chief Assistant Commissioner from the department’s Enforcement Division (JHEAT), anyone caught doing these acts at burial sites could be fined up to RM5,000 or even jailed for up to three years.
He said such acts go against Islamic teachings and can be charged under Section 3A of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Takzir) Enactment Terengganu 2001.
“Any individual who engages in practices such as witchcraft, black magic, or other actions that contradict Islamic law can face legal action. The punishment includes a fine not exceeding RM5,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both,” he said.
They took the soil home with them
Aizi Saidi added that the Besut District Religious Office’s enforcement team will be keeping an eye on the area regularly to make sure no syirik (polytheism) or superstitious practices are happening at the burial site.
Previously, WORLD OF BUZZ reported that a Facebook post went viral claiming that some visitors had taken soil from the grave, putting it into their pockets and plastic bags to bring home.
In response, the victim’s family decided to put up a barrier around the grave to stop anything like that from happening again
They also announced that visits to the grave are now limited to between 9 AM and 6 PM, and no visits will be allowed from July 2 to 5 for certain reasons.
