A motivational talk at school can be insightful and fun at the same time, but boundaries are equally important. A viral video showing a student delivering a pickup line to an ustazah during a talk recently circulated online.
In the video, the schoolboy could be seen standing up and holding a microphone and saying, “What the difference between my IC and you, Ustazah? My IC is in my wallet, but you’re in my heart,” the kid delivered the line smoothly before he excitedly jumped.
The other students laughed and clapped at the situation, but many netizens were not happy with what they saw and heard. Many were baffled by the situation as they believed this wasn’t a culture that should happen at school, where children spend much of their time.
Please, don’t normalise it
Public Health Malaysia got their attention on the matter, and in a Facebook post last night (December 16), the organisation released a statement and urged everyone NOT to normalise giving pickup lines at school due to its nature.
“A pickup line is a planned action to strike a conversation with a stranger that comes with romantic or sexual intention. Schools are the pillars to educate and control the students.”
While the pickup line trend is popular in the media, PHM sees the “entrance” of pickup lines in the schools as a red alert. Unfortunately, there is no special clause to stop that from happening.
PHM added that not only is the trend unhealthy, but it also gives students leniency to disrespect the elderly, have no boundaries, and, in a way, give them the chance to be involved in immoral activities and communication.
“If this virus spreads further into the school, the teachers will have tough times ahead in educating the students.”
We hope the relevant parties will look into the matter before this trend transitions into becoming something normal among students.
