The Covid-19 pandemic has introduced numerous types of masks that can protect us from being infected by the deadly virus. However, a study has shown that face shields and masks with built-in exhalation valves are ineffective against the spread of Covid-19.
Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science had conducted an investigation to prove the ineffectiveness of face shields and masks with valves. They used tiny droplets of glycerin and distilled water and installed in on a mannequin wearing a face shield and a mask with a valve to mimic coughing and sneezing. A laser light sheet was used to track and visualise the paths of the droplets once the mannequin expelled it from its mouth.
The study was published in a journal called Physics Of Fluids. It is reported that the face shield blocked the initial passage of the droplets but then moved around the visor and spread over to larger areas.
As for the mask with a valve, the researchers found that droplets could be seen expelled from the mannequin through the valve and spread around it. They also discovered that masks with valves beat the purpose to protect from infection as the valve is unfiltered.
Despite the comfort that these masks provide for the general public, it certainly does not protect enough to combat the deadly virus. According to the Swiss news portal, the physicians in the health department of the administrative district of Graübunden urged the public to avoid using face shields when going out as it offers little to no protection against Covid-19.
Choose the right mask and wear it properly to protect yourself and the public as well.
