Study: Kuala Lumpur is 4th Best Destination in Asia for Remote Work, 22nd in the World

Kuala Lumpur has just been named the 4th best destination in Asia for remote work by the latest iteration of The Best Destinations for Remote Work rankings by the global human resources platform Remote.

Globally, Kuala Lumpur is ranked 22nd, marking a significant improvement from the previous iteration of the study which placed the Malaysian capital city in 84th place.

Madrid, Spain

In the overall rankings, the top 10 destinations are dominated by European cities, with Spain’s Madrid coming in 1st, followed by its neighbour Portugal, which has the city of Madeira in 2nd place.

Canada’s Toronto is 3rd, New Zealand’s Auckland 4th and Japan’s Tokyo is the highest-ranked Asian city in the list in 5th place.

The Best Destinations for Remote Work in Asia

Ranking 22nd globally, only 3 Asian cities placed higher than Malaysia in the list, which are Tokyo, Taipei and Thailand’s Bangkok.

According to Remote, Kuala Lumpur is a captivating smash of ethnicities from across Asia with a healthy dose of European influence drawn from our country’s colonial history.

The study further asserted that Kuala Lumpur is a taste for the senses, with a humid, tropical climate providing the backdrop for an incredible food scene reflective of our multicultural heartbeat.

For remote workers, the Malaysian capital city offers fast internet, ample co-working spots, friendly visa conditions and a world-class airport.

In fact, Kuala Lumpur stood out as the top 5 cities in the world with the most favourable remote work visa and incentives programme.

How the rankings were determined

According to Remote, several factors were scrutinised for the study, which is meant to guide digital nomads and remote professionals in making decisions that are consistent with their personal preferences and career goals.

Among the factors considered include openness, cost of living, safety, quality of life, internet infrastructure, attractiveness, inflation and incentives for remote workers.
