Malaysia made it into the top 10!

According to the 2024 Global Peace Index (GPI), Malaysia ranks 10th out of 163 countries as one of the safest and most peaceful nations, with a score of 1.427.

Malaysia has moved up 9 spots from last year, rising from 19th place to 10th place this year.

In Asia, Malaysia holds 2nd place, just behind Singapore, which is ranked 1st in the region and 5th globally with a score of 1.339. Japan follows closely, securing 3rd place in Asia and 17th worldwide, with a score of 1.525.

Iceland takes the lead as the safest and most peaceful country worldwide with an impressive score of 1.112, followed by Ireland with a score of 1.303 and Austria in 3rd place with 1.313.

The methodology used for the analysis

The GPI measures peacefulness in three areas such as safety and security, ongoing conflict, and militarisation.

The study shows that the Asia-Pacific region got a bit less peaceful in the 2024 GPI, with the overall score dropping by 0.1%. Even so, it’s still the 2nd most peaceful region in the world, a spot it has held since 2017.

Overall, the world has become less stable over the past 17 years, with big jumps in political instability, conflicts, deaths from conflicts, and violent protests.
