Study: Malaysia Ranks 8th Among the Most Unsafe Countries for Women in Southeast Asia

There’s nothing inherently wrong with living in Malaysia. Despite being blessed with good food and fine weather all year round, how safe is it for women to live in our country?

According to a study shared by @seasia.stats, Malaysia ranks 64th out of 177 countries globally in terms of safety for women, based on data from the Women Peace and Security (WPS) Index 2023/24.

Malaysia ranks 8th among the most unsafe countries for women in Southeast Asia

According to the study, Malaysia has a total score of 0.738, placing it 8th. This ranking is based on assessments of fairness, inclusion, and safety for women across Southeast Asia.

Following closely behind is Thailand, with a score of 0.764, securing the 9th place. Meanwhile, Vietnam ranks slightly higher with a score of 0.707, putting it in the 7th place.

Urgent need for improvements in women’s rights and safety in Southeast Asia!

Myanmar ranks the lowest in Southeast Asia and 13th globally, with a score of 0.451. Following closely, the Philippines ranks in 2nd place with a score of 0.612, indicating significant challenges for women’s safety. Cambodia is not far behind, taking the 3rd place with a score of 0.645.

While Singapore is considered the safest country for women in Southeast Asia, with an impressive score of 0.887. This high score places Singapore in the 10th spot, reflecting its strong commitment to women’s safety, inclusion, and fairness.

1. Myanmar – 0.451

2. Philippines – 0.612

3. Cambodia – 0.645

4. Timor-Leste – 0.664

5. Indonesia – 0.700

6. Laos – 0.704

7. Vietnam – 0.707

8. Malaysia – 0.738

9. Thailand – 0.764

10. Singapore – 0.887
