If you’re an adrenaline junkie who loves taking extreme selfies, you may want to avoid doing it in dangerous places because a study has found that this millennial habit had resulted in many tragic deaths. Oh dear!

According to a study by researchers at the US National Library of Medicine, 259 people, between the year 2011 and 2017, have died whilst attempting to take “extreme” selfies, report The Star. The report revealed that the deaths mostly happened in dangerous locations, such as:
- Tall buildings
- Mountains
- Roadsides
Be careful, don’t attempt to take a selfie when you are at these places.
The common causes of death are usually drowning, transport accidents and falling. That said, the results may vary according to a region. For instance, more than half of the selfie deaths were recorded in India and most selfie-related deaths, which were caused by firearms, were recorded in the United States.

The report added that the average age of people who were killed when attempting a dangerous selfie are usually around the age of 22 and almost 80 per cent of the recorded deaths are males. Yikes!
Nonetheless, the study stated that the figures provided may be incomplete because these extreme selfies tend to be under-reported since it is considered a rather new phenomena.
The authors of the study were quoted as saying,
“It is important to assess the true burden, causes, and reasons for selfie deaths so that appropriate interventions can be made.”

As a solution to the issue, the researchers suggested that “no selfie zone” signages should be erected in various places to warn people of the dangers of taking extreme selfies.
As of now, there are 16 “no selfie zones” in Mumbai and similarly, Russia and Indonesia have taken steps towards the same goal. Have you seen any of these zones anywhere in Malaysia?
