Gg, liao!

The recent study shows that shorter people have a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to taller people, reported NST. According to research in the medical journal Diabetologia, every additional 10 centimetres in height equals to “41 per cent smaller chance of men contracting diabetes” and a 33 per cent smaller chance of women having diabetes.

Therefore, shorter people are more prone to contracting diabetes because they are linked to “higher liver fat content”. The research authors speculated that they (short people) also have a larger risk of developing the diseases mentioned below:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke

Not only that, but insulin sensitivity and some special cells in the pancreas – which releases hormones – work better in tall people. FYI, this study comprises a “detailed medical survey” of over 16,600 women and more than 11,000 men who are aged 40 to 65. The study was conducted in Potsdam, Germany.

The authors were quoted as saying,

“These observations corroborate that height is a useful predictive marker for diabetes risk.”

The International Diabetes Federation concluded that about 420 million people in the world have diabetes and the number will increase to 629 million in 2045. Diabetes is categorised into two sub-types, and they are mentioned below:

  • Type-1: Usually diagnosed when the patient is young because the body doesn’t produce insulin (which is a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels).
  • Type-2: Patient’s body makes insulin but it isn’t enough to accommodate thus glucose remains in the blood.

Diabetic people have excessive blood glucose/ blood sugar that originates from food. This disease is related to obesity and with time, can lead to several deadly diseases. These diseases are mentioned below:

  • Blindness
  • Kidney damage
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Limb amputations for some cases

Well, that’s scary! What do you think about this new study? Let us know in the comments below. On that note, I dedicate this song from the legendary, Randy Newman to all my fellow short people:
