In yesterday’s (17 August) live press conference by the Ministry of Health (MOH), there were 12 new cases of Covid-19 that were reported.

However, what’s concerning is that majority of these cases were detected from the new Tawar cluster in Kedah instead of the Sivagangga cluster, which was earlier suspected to be a super spreader cluster. According to a statement posted on MOH’s Facebook, four of the new Tawar cluster cases were found in Kedah and an additional three people tested positive from the same cluster in Penang.

Health Director-general, Tan Sri Dato Seri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said, “all of these new cases are from third generation.” Currently, the number of active cases from the Tawar cluster is 46, making it the largest active case cluster in Malaysia.

The Tawar cluster first started from a 53-year-old man who attended a prayer ceremony for his deceased family member in Kedah. MOH has since carried out testing and found positive cases in three states: Kedah, Penang and Perak. As of now, 1,135 people were tested from this cluster in the involved states.
