Previously, a video of a 9-year-old student breaking down in tears went viral after she was seen being scolded by a group of teachers who were trying to force a confession out of her.
The incident caught the attention of the Education Minister, who has since issued a reminder and launched an investigation into the matter.
The teacher denied being involved
In a recent development, police have opened an investigation into allegations that a teacher scolded and verbally abused a student, following the circulation of the viral video on social media.
According to Harian Metro, Kajang District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said they received a report on May 26 from a 40-year-old teacher who denied any involvement in the incident.
“The woman, a teacher at a school in Kajang, denied any involvement and has requested a full investigation to determine the truth. So far, no police report has been lodged by the student or the parents regarding the incident,” he said.
Investigations are currently underway
Naazron added that the investigation paper was opened under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction.
In addition, investigations are also being carried out under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in jail, a fine, or both.
“At the same time, a parallel investigation is ongoing under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a one-year jail term, a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, if convicted,” he said.
