Health authorities are warning people to avoid the sun in Thailand if they can, as the heat index has already hit the orange “dangerous to health” level.

With temperatures rising, the heat index from March 5 to 14 showed some areas hitting 42-51.9ºC. People in the southern, central, eastern, and northeastern regions are all at risk, according to a top health official, as reported by Bangkok Post.

Temperatures will continue to rise

On Tuesday (March 18), the Meteorological Department reported that temperatures soared to 38-39ºC in 10 northern provinces on Monday (March 17).

However, a brief cooldown is expected in the upper part of Thailand until Saturday (March 22) as cold air moves into the Northeast. While strong winds are likely, rainfall will remain minimal.

From March 23 to 28, temperatures will rise again, bringing intense heat. Scattered summer storms are expected, especially from March 29 into next month.

Despite the heat, this summer isn’t expected to be as extreme as last year.

“Avoid being outdoors and stay hydrated”

Deputy director-general of the Department of Health, Thiti Sawangtham, is reminding everyone to check the weather forecast, avoid outdoor activities, and stay hydrated.

He said the most at-risk groups are the elderly, those who are overweight, outdoor workers, people who drink alcohol, and anyone with existing health issues, including mental health conditions.

He also warned that heat rash, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke can be dangerous and even deadly.

Planning a trip to Thailand soon? Stay hydrated and be prepared for the heat!
