Thai border controls have been tightened following the discovery of its first few local cases on the B.1.351 Covid-19 variant, which was first detected in South Africa, stemming from illegal border crossings.

According to BERNAMA, their first local case of the variant was detected in a 32-year-old Thai man, after he had been visited by Malaysian family members who used an informal border crossing.

The family members, his Malaysian wife, son and mother-in-law is said to have visited him on 12 April and returned to Malaysia on 4 May.

The Thai Director-general of Disease Control Department, Dr Opas Karnkawinpong shared that they all failed to adhere to the mandatory quarantine procedures.

“The South African variant detected in Thailand is similar to those found in Malaysia,”

“Following movement restrictions in the sub district from 9 May to 22 May, the situation is under control. No new infections reported,” he said.

While we understand that being away from family members can be difficult, it’s only logical that we stay at home to prevent the spread of Covid-19 so that when it is finally eradicated from our shores, we would no longer have to be apart from our family members.
