Imagine if this were to happen in Malaysia!

The existence of fake news and non-scientific propaganda on Facebook is no surprise to anyone and it’s evident from the Ministry of Health’s (KKM) social media accounts debunking fake news every day. While Malaysian authorities seem to take the “issue fine” approach, this Thailand minister chose a more drastic option.

Thailand’s Ministry of Digital, Economy and Society (DES) Chaiwut Thanakhamanusorn has decided to take legal action towards the social media platform, Facebook, for refusing to close the accounts of users who spread fake news and criticise the monarchy reported The Bangkok Post.

He announced the matter at a committee meeting to control the spread of fake news and added that the court has already ordered a total of 164 URLs to close this month. The ministry has also sent out a warning letter for internet and Facebook service providers to comply with the order.

“Despite going through the negotiation process, Facebook still refuses to follow the order to close all the accounts. I will take legal action against Facebook in Thailand and its headquarters.”

The minister reminded that Facebook must be responsible for issues that involve the country as well as comply with the country’s law. Fake news being disseminated include vaccine information, planned lottery numbers as well as Covid-19 regulations.

How do you think the public would react if this was implemented in Malaysia? Let us know in the comments section!
