Recently, our neighbouring Thailand held a historic general election which saw the progressive Move Forward and Pheu Thai parties winning big and defeating military-backed conservative parties.
Now, they are in the midst of forming a coalition government with 6 other parties which share the same “values, agendas and accountability” via a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
As reported by Bangkok Post, the MoU would involve introducing several major reforms to the country, including writing the constitution, ending monopolies, re-listing cannabis as a narcotic and allowing for same-sex marriage.
The alliance will be led by the Move Forward Party with its popular leader Pita Limjaroenrat set to become Prime Minister.

According to the MoU, the 8-party alliance will introduce a same-sex marriage law which as the name suggests, allows for those from the same sex to be legally married in the country.
However, the MoU states that the law would not force compliance by those who consider it to be against their religion.
Another notable change is the re-listing of cannabis as a narcotic. The new government would still for its usage to be legal, only more regulated.
Other reforms include:
- Zero-based budgeting
- Public welfare for people of all ages
- Reform of the bureaucracy, police, armed forces and justice system
- Replace mandatory military conscription with voluntary recruitment
- Promote sustainable peace in the southern provinces
- Terminate monopoly in all industries
