Captain Azrin Mohamad Zawawi went viral on 3 November after his father, Mohamad Zawawi Ahmad posted on his Facebook account about the Kapten Corner Stall at Boom Town USJ11 manned by his son, a former pilot in his full pilot’s uniform.
Captain Azrin made this brave decision as the future of the aviation industry is still unknown due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
We spoke to Zawawi and asked how has his son’s business has been going since becoming viral to which he replied that after his story went viral, the food at Kapten Corner was sold out extremely early every day. He even said that there were so many customers till they don’t even have time to rest.
How did he go from pilot to stall owner?
Well, Captain Azrin was aware of his impending retrenchment from Malindo Air and thus he made some inquiries and a sympathetic friend who owns Boom Town Cafe in USJ11 offered him and his wife space there. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Boom Town was not doing too well either. On opening day he sold his food at a 50 per cent discount and was sold out before nightfall.
Azrin and his wife who hail from Kamunting, Perak put their minds together and created a unique menu which comprises of Ipoh Curry Mee, Mee Hoon Soup, Laksa Utara and even Rojak Buah!
How has the pandemic affected you?
While Zawawi himself wasn’t affected financially as he and his wife are both government retirees, he admits that the travel ban is definitely a hassle as he’s unable to go and help his son.
Captain Azrin, on the other hand, was affected financially and had to even transfer his eldest child from a private school as it became too expensive. Another two of his children are studying in a Tahfiz school in Kelantan and he might even consider transferring them back to a Sekolah Menenggah Kebangsaan in Shah Alam in order to save on expenses.
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all those who have been supporting my son’s business!”
We asked Zawawi what would he like to say to Malaysians who have been supporting his business and besides their friends, he also thanked countless social media users who helped to make his business go viral which brought in the crowd.
“The same help should also be extended to many others who had to resort to doing any form of business or jobs just to put food on the table for the family after losing their jobs,” he said. Zawawi added that in these times of hardship, only the tough get going!
