The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in Melaka has responded to a viral video that appears to show traffic officers halting vehicles, including an ambulance, to allow a convoy of VIP vehicles to pass.

Melaka Police Chief Datuk Dzulkairi Mukhtar said the incident occurred while officers from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) of the Melaka Police Contingent Headquarters were carrying out escort duties for a Chinese delegation of incentive investors.

The convoy involved 18 buses traveling from the Ayer Keroh Toll Plaza Rest and Service Area (R&R) as part of efforts to promote the state’s tourism.

The incident happened on Thursday (11 December) at about 10:30 AM at the Jalan Taming Sari traffic light junction, when traffic officers were conducting traffic control.

Dzulkairi said that while traffic control was being carried out, the officers noticed a Red Crescent ambulance in the right lane with its red and blue beacon lights switched on, but without its siren or emergency lights activated.

“The ambulance was queuing in the right lane like other vehicles. The officers assessed that it was not responding to an emergency.”

“The assessment was based on the justification that if the ambulance had been on an emergency call, it would have used the left lane and activated its siren at the location to request priority passage,” he said in a statement.

He added that after the last bus in the convoy passed and the officers left the scene, the ambulance remained in the right lane without its siren activated, contradicting the claims made in the viral video.
