Just yesterday (7 June), the Ministry of Health issued a statement confirming that these five cosmetic products do indeed contain harmful substances and thus, urged members of the public to stop using them immediately.
The skincare products are:
1. Deeja Cosmetic Star Cream (contains Hydroquinone and Tretinoin)

3. Deeja Krim Nano – Night (contains mercury)

According to the statement, products which contain hydroquinone and tretinoin should be registered under controlled drugs and should only be prescribed by medical professionals.
Using products containing hydroquinone without supervision can cause the skin to develop a rash, unwanted skin tone changes, or even hypersensitive skin. Also, this substance will reduce the depigmentation process in our skin, which protects our skin against dangerous UV light, thus increasing the risk of having skin cancer.
Meanwhile, tretinoin is often used to treat acne problems and wrinkles. Excessive usage of tretinoin will cause our skin to peel due to dryness, become hypersensitive towards sunlight and also be prone to redness.
You should also know that products containing mercury can cause severe damage to our kidneys and nervous system as mercury can be absorbed by our skin into our body. Besides that, it can disrupt the brain development of toddlers and unborn babies too. Yikes!
