With the recent spike of Covid-19 cases in our country saw a 4-digit figure in cases per day which has sadly become the new norm, a significant number of Malaysians have found themselves losing their source of income. Amongst all the states, Sabah has got to be one of the worst hit by the pandemic.

Having seen first hand how scathing the virus has ravaged the state, a group of youth came together and created a movement to help those in dire straits in Sabah.

Called the Dua Ringgit Project, this movement was started by a group of university and high school students, namely multiple Leo Clubs from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Keningau community-based organisations and eight secondary schools. They are also supported by Lions Club International in doing this

The movement aims to feed over 1,000 less privileged households in Sabah that are affected by the Movement Control Order in the state. As of right now, the movement has managed to crowdfund and distribute food to 250 families!

In fact, as reported by FMT, the Dua Ringgit Project started its first phase on October 15 and managed to collect RM10,000 in just five days. The money was used to purchase and distribute to families in Kota Kinabalu, Keningau and Tawau.

The name Dua Ringgit Project derived from research of underprivileged families in Sabah who could only spend an average of RM7 per day for all three daily meals. That means it’s about RM2 for each meal hence the name of the movement.

The group’s ultimate aim is to collect RM40,000 to feed 1,000 families. The next phase of the project would be to include underprivileged households in Tambunan, Tenom and Sandakan in addition to the areas mentioned earlier.

If you’re inspired by these youths’ resolve to help the less fortunate and are interested to help the cause, you can visit the project’s Facebook page here for more information.
