After protesters in Jakarta, Indonesia, ransacked the home of lawmaker Ahmad Sharoni amid violent unrest over parliamentary perks, hundreds more have stormed the residences of other lawmakers, particularly those seen dancing in the Indonesian Parliament.
Among the homes targeted by the mob were those of Uya Kuya and Eko Patrio, followed by reports surfacing on social media about Finance Minister Sri Mulyani’s residence.
In one video, a wave of rioters can be seen roaming around Eko Patrio’s home, carrying off anything worth stealing.
According to reports, rioters forced their way into Uya Kuya’s home by destroying the front gate and breaking down doors before vandalising and ransacking the property.
Police and soldiers arrived moments too late, as most looters had already fled with electronic goods and clothing.
In Eko Patrio’s case, looters reportedly made off with luggage, clothing, a refrigerator, and a gas cylinder.
Both politicians became targets after being filmed dancing during a parliamentary session, an act widely criticised as insensitive amid the nation’s economic struggles.
Uya and Eko have since issued public apologies and pledged to act more responsibly moving forward.
Netizens commenting on the video had strong reactions.
“When you look at their homes, you can only wonder just how much they make.”
“Some politicians are staying in Singapore. They don’t dare run to Malaysia, fearing Indonesians here will retaliate,” said a user.
