Groupers in Malaysia are usually very expensive, as the estimated cost of the fish weighing 3 to 4kg would be about RM50. Which is why many of us usually don’t consider buying a grouper while grocery shopping.
However, this man from Georgetown, Penang had recently splurged RM7,600 on a 152kg giant grouper, reported The Star.
The giant grouper, which caught the attention the market-goers in Cecil Street Market, was reportedly the biggest catch of the year (2018).
“This is the biggest fish I caught this year. I didn’t measure the length but it could be around six feet (1.8m),” said Khor Swee Boon, the fisherman who caught the grouper.
Six feet?! That’s as tall as a human!

The grouper that was caught on Tuesday night (27 March 2018) was bought by Chew Kean Ghee, 46, for a whopping RM7,600 but before Chew brought back the gigantic fish, it was cut into pieces for him.
FYI, this isn’t the first time Chew had splurged on a grouper. Once, in 2014, he bought a 200kg grouper for RM11,000 from the same fisherman, Khor. This man really loves his groupers!

Later in the day, the giant grouper was cooked and served to patrons who said that the fish tasted fresh and delicious.
“It was really good. The flesh was sweet and complemented my porridge nicely.”
“I come here to eat almost every week but did not know about the big catch,” said businessman Tan Kek Loon, 39, who was there with his wife, Chua Hui Teng, 33, and their son Tan Yu Shyang, 7.
