Kuala Terengganu’s one and only cinema has implemented a new policy which separates men and women from sitting together. In conjunction with their re-opening on 1st July, Lotus Five Star (LFS) cinemas released a statement on their Facebook page over the weekend to inform the public of their new gender-segregation seating arrangement.

“Starting 1st July 2020, Kuala Terengganu’s cinema will implement a seating zone for men, women and families, as enforced by the Kuala Terengganu City Council government.”
LFS Cinemas manager, Zulmajdi Razali, said this new rule was introduced “to ensure all activities that are carried out follow Syariah law,” adding that the management is responsible for making sure this segregated seating between men and women will help surveillance in the cinema hall should any suspicious acts of misconduct arise, as reported by Yatim, from Sinar Harian.
However, according to Razali, this regulation will apply to ALL movie-goers, including non-Muslims.
Couples who go to the LFS Cinema won’t be able to sit like this.
“For the cinema halls that are smaller, families can choose to sit wherever they want. However, if the halls are bigger, there will be a designated space in the middle of the hall for families. Nonetheless, this depends on the present situation. Male and female visitors may be placed in the middle seating area together as long as boundaries are maintained”, said the cinema manager.
LFS Kuala Terengganu is the first cinema in Malaysia to practise this new policy. “As far as I know, no other cinema has enforced segregated seating zones like this.” However, he stressed that this policy is still relatively new and is subjected to further improvisation to ensure the satisfaction of all cinema-goers.
