In order to stand out and be unique, I’m sure every hotel would try to find all sorts of themes and designs that would make them different from the rest. Well, this hotel in Ipoh certainly did find a way to be special.
A new hotel in Ipoh has just made it into the Malaysia Book of Records for creating a permanent backdrop in its lobby out of 53,592 1 sen coins. That’s about RM535 worth of coins!
The coins were glued to the wall one by one to display the hotel’s name “1969 Business Suites”, which won the hotel the title “Biggest backdrop display made of one cent coins”, as reported by The Star. Congrats, 1969 Business Suites!

Datin Kelly Yang, chief executive officer of 1969 Business Suites was awarded the certificate by Lee Pooi Leng, the record book’s office manager in conjunction with the hotel’s launch on Wednesday (June 13).
The wall which measures about 5.73m by 2.62m is the brainchild of the hotel’s founders. Two weeks were taken for project coordinator, Wong Mun Hong to piece together the copper wall.
He said that the 1 sen coin was not like every other coin as it was made out of copper that the country had stopped producing. Do you still keep your 1 sen coins?

“So I thought why not start collecting these coins, display them and leave a legacy for the generations to come to appreciate the coins which may be extinct in the near future,” he said to reporters at the launch of the hotel at Bandar Cyber in Seri Botani.
“I believe our hotel is the first with such a backdrop, which has a story to tell to our guests.”

Yoke Shin said that this business suite was created after many of his business associates had asked him for recommendations on a nice and quiet place to discuss work matters out of the city. They wanted to have a proper place to rest and enjoy the nice ambience, accompanied by a cup of coffee.
“We acquired a few units of shophouses and added a modern colonial touch. Right now, we have a total of 42 rooms over two blocks and there are plans to add another 19 rooms, plus a rooftop swimming pool, a function hall and gym.”
“We decided on the name ‘1969 Business Suites’ because it is easier for people to remember numbers instead of sophisticated hotel names,” he said.

He added that every corner of each hotel room had been utilised perfectly, as guests would immediately feel comfortable as soon as they step foot into the room.
He then said that there is a café in the hotel called Cawan Mu, where authentic local dishes like nasi lemak, nasi biryani and nasi hujan panas are served.
“We don’t serve dishes like steak because we want to introduce the Malaysian cuisine to the world,” he said.

He also said that they have plans to open two more facilities in Ipoh by 2020. He said a semi-hotel as well as a service apartment were planned for a piece of land along Jalan Kampar, while a high-end backpackers hotel was planned for Tambun.
“These are our plans for Perak and after that, we will develop such concepts in other parts of the country, and after fulfilling the 1,000 rooms capacity, we will be heading to China,” he added.
