On 10 February,  Sugarbook, Asia’s largest sugar daddy dating platform revealed in a survey that a shocking 40 per cent spike was observed in sign-ups amongst students for sugar dating from January 2021.

After the reveal of the survey which even exposed the name of the universities with the highest sign-ups, netizens and administrators were in an uproar. One of them is  Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Ahmad Marzuk Shaary, who said that the Sugarbook application should be blocked as it leads to immoral activities, reported Bernama.

He added that if this was really happening among university students, the government should look into it and take stern actions against those involved especially the operators behind the application.

“This is something that is very sad for us. The application should be prevented from being used in our country as it encourages people to do things that are not right and violate the laws including syariah law.”

Based on Sugarbook’s survey, it was revealed that students have been financially desperate. Since the implementation of MCO 1.0 last year March, public and private universities were forced to close down and students resorted to online learning. Despite the new system, university tuition fees remained the same which proved to be one of the most challenging expenses for most families.

Darren Chan, Founder and CEO of Sugarbook even added that through sugar dating, the students not only get monetary gifts, but they also get to pursue career advancements by connecting with high-net-worth individuals.
